Alycia Matthews Bio

I can't remember ever wanting to be anything else other than an artist and it is still true today. I was born and raised in Newburyport MA, where I’ve returned to, after graduating from Ringling School of Art & Design and years in Texas where I and had my own art & graphic design studio.

A little over 10 years ago, I began creating with papier mâché. I love the artistic process of taking my original sketches, and then sculpting them to life in three dimension. When painting my pieces, I use a dry brush technique. I start with a rich base color over the entire piece and then dry brush layer upon layer of color, starting from dark to light, which gives it a warm antiqued look. Painting in the all details, including facial expressions, makes the whole piece come alive.

My mind is constantly brimming with new ideas to create. Some of my inspiration comes from things of days gone by, and then instilling that same nostalgic appeal and personality into my artwork. Each piece is created with heirloom quality, to be enjoyed from generation to generation.
